When we think of Christmas, one of the things that first comes to mind is buying and receiving gifts. Many have lists of presents we hope to buy, while some of us have lists of the presents we hope to receive.

This year my children, who are now grown adults, have texted me or emailed me their gift list and the gift list for the grandkids. Some kids never grow up (including me)! It’s common practice that when you buy a present for someone else, you wrap it first.

Around 2,000 years ago, God gave humanity the best gift we could ever dream of—His perfect Son, born into this world as an innocent baby.

There is a particular verse that conveys the essence of this Great Gift, although you won’t find it in the typical nativity scene in the Bible. In 2 Corinthians 9:15, the words of the apostle Paul resound:

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

What about this gift is indescribable, too great for words? If Jesus had been just another child born on earth, we would have nothing to celebrate this Christmas. But this Child was unlike any other.

Fully God and fully man, Jesus Christ is God’s indescribable gift to us.

But how do you wrap an indescribable gift?

God didn’t just suddenly drop Jesus out of heaven onto the earth. He prepared humankind for His coming hundreds of years ahead of time. There are more than 350 prophecies in the Old Testament concerning the coming of the Messiah written over a 1,000-year period.

Why so many prophecies? The more markers in Scripture, the more certain we can be of His identity.

Throughout history, false messiahs have always risen up and led people astray. But God wanted us to be sure that Jesus is the Messiah, His Only Begotten Son, so He told us what to look for beforehand:

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” – Isaiah 7:14

This was fulfilled in the unparalleled conception and birth of Jesus, as seen in Matthew 1.

God gave His people many prophetic signposts of the Messiah’s arrival. Here is a highlight from my recent message at HRock Church where I share more of those prophetic words:
