Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights.”  – Isaiah 42:1

Were you one of the kids that was picked last for the sports team? Or the one wondering if you’d ever be invited to the prom? It was this external affirmation that helped to alleviate the inward feelings of aloneness and unworthiness or even rejection. We wanted to be valued by our peers, esteemed in the eyes of those around us. One of the greatest desires of our heart is to be loved.

Being chosen is a defining mark of being loved.

To be chosen means something; it is often the most unspoken desire we carry in our hearts, especially when it comes to relationships with others. For the single person, it is a hope waiting for fulfillment. For the outcast, it is the desire to come to rest in the embrace of a welcoming community. Danny Silk in his advice to the married person, recommends telling your spouse daily that “I choose you.” It is a reminder of the importance of the commitment you’ve made to one another and the life you are building together – despite the frustrations.

In the book of Isaiah there are a number of passages where the Lord speaks to His outcast and rebellious people and calls them “My Chosen.” God renews His commitment to love in the midst of the most difficult relationship. He reminds us all, that we are His chosen ones.

It is not a requirement; it is a desire in His heart to love us.

Thus says the LORD who made you And formed you from the womb, who will help you, ‘Do not fear, O Jacob My servant; And you Jeshurun whom I have chosen. ” – Isaiah 44:2

He thought of you from your first moment. He reaches out for you daily to help, whether or not you perceive it. You are in His eye sight, and on His heart.
Jesus at the climax of His ministry tells this same thing to His disciples:

You did not choose Me, but I chose you …” – John 15:16

These words have been captured and conveyed to us by John, that we would know that these are Jesus’ words to each of us.  He chose you, before you ever considered loving Him. He picked you for His team, to be the companion of His heart, to be embraced in the eternal love of God.

You are chosen.
