Whether or not you participate in social media, you’ve probably at least heard of Facebook. When you create a Facebook profile for yourself, you become a member of a worldwide community of more than 1.35 billion people. Besides posting basic information about yourself, you can share things like your interests, sports involvement, personal philosophy, recreational activities and photos. It's a way of letting others know you and stay current with what's happening in your life. You can control the information about yourself that you share, and other Facebook users can choose to visit your page and post comments if they want to.
You might say that blessings are the equivalent of a Facebook page for God. Blessings are His method of making Himself known to us. Through blessings, Abba God reveals His goodness—the essence of Himself—to us. When He blesses us, He makes His intention and purpose for us clear. God encourages us to experience more of His goodness with each blessing that He gives. Psalm 34:8 contains this invitation to visit His Facebook page: “O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man who trusts in Him.”
As we grow in our knowledge and understanding of God's nature and character, we become increasingly able to see, believe and receive more of His blessings. Through receiving His blessings, we become more aware of His presence with us, and our confidence and joy in Him grow. Participating in His blessings confirms to us that God is thinking about us favorably.
Abba God describes His thoughts about us in several ways. He wants us to know that we are on His mind all the time: “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand” (Psalm 139:17-18a). God makes it clear that we have always been on His mind: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before you were born I set you apart” (Jeremiah 1:5). His thoughts are full of wonderful plans for us: “I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
God's goodness is so complete that bountiful blessings flow from His nature to us in a constant and undiluted stream. Blessings aren’t so much something that God does, as they are the outflowing of something that He is. Abba God is inviting us into a relationship to share that outflowing with Him. His blessings aren’t simply tools for us to use to make our lives and the lives of those around us better. They're actually an invitation to commune with God Himself and to enter our rightful place as heirs of His Kingdom, seated in heavenly places with Him.
The Bible is actually a handbook on God's blessings. It identifies His blessings to us, instructs us in how to receive them and helps us understand God’s intention and purpose in blessing us. Visit God's Facebook page regularly by reading Scripture daily and meditating on the promise of blessings it contains. You will find a joyful expectation growing about how blessed your life can be!
