the Ahn family is growing!
Just a few days after the birth of my third grandchild came some more wonderful news: My newest grandson, Levi Jackson Baik, was born on July 24, at 7 lbs. 2 oz.! My daughter Grace and her husband, Steve, are overjoyed with their healthy baby boy, and Sue and I are now double-happy grandparents of four!
The world-transforming word of God
HRock Church is home to people from a large variety of backgrounds and ethnicities. As part of our faith-filled community, one of the things that unify us is our sense of family.
In one of my recent messages, I spoke on The Power of God’s Word in the context of how it has transformed the world and shaped our commonly held family values.
According to historian Alvin Schmidt,
Even knowledgeable believers will be amazed at how many of our present institutions and values reflect a Christian origin. Not only countless individual lives but civilization itself was transformed by Jesus Christ.”
Just imagine living in a world absent of healthy families. Where the leaders of the day have no problem with having harems of hundreds of women, men and even children. Where women suffer oppression in widespread polygamous systems.
Jesus Christ came on the scene in a time of moral depravity. The British historian Edward Gibbon writes that by the first and second centuries after Christ, undefiled sexual intercourse, along with marital faithfulness, had essentially disappeared.
But thank the Lord for what he has done in the world since that time!
Because of His Word, God has transformed the world by…
1. Establishing Monogamy
Christianity made marriage a greater responsibility for men by requiring that husbands remain faithful, committed and loving to the same woman—no matter what. When a husband is forbidden extramarital affairs, taking a second wife or divorcing a difficult wife, then his wife is empowered. She now has the security to seek her dignity and rights.
Jesus made His view of marriage clear in Matthew 19:4-6,
‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh“? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.'”
2. Promoting Fidelity
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus challenged His followers to deal with the spiritual roots behind infidelity: the adultery in their hearts and the lust in their eyes. He also promoted loyalty in marriage and told them not to divorce their wives except in the case of marital unfaithfulness.
So powerful is the Christian doctrine and practice of marriage that Edward Gibbon declares, “The dignity of marriage was restored by the Christians.”
3. Upholding the Family
Here is a highlight from my recent message when I shared on the way God’s Word has shaped history by inculcating Christian values into our society:
Something Is About To Shift
On Wednesday this week, I’m looking forward to kicking off our annual LeaderSHIFT Conference at HRock Church!
