Throughout human history, people have searched for the key that would give them power, wealth, longevity and wisdom. The quest for this knowledge is the stuff of legends, ancient religions and secret societies. Just a few common examples include the Fountain of Youth, the medieval practice of alchemy and more recently the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction.
Practitioners of various approaches insist they have “secret wisdom” that opens up access to channels of power to the initiated. Although no secret wisdom has ever consistently proved effective, millions still flock to seminars and buy self-help books to learn about the latest methods promising ongoing success.
Is there really such a thing as a “master key” that will allow us to tap into “secret wisdom?” Actually there is! Jesus Christ taught that such a “master key” does exist. It's contained in a parable that He told known as “The Sower and the Seed.” In Mark 4:13, He tells His disciples that understanding this particular parable is the key to understanding everything. It’s the key to unlocking our authority in God’s Kingdom.
The parable describes a sower who sows seed that falls on various types of ground. A lot of the ground is poor quality and doesn't allow the seed to put down deep roots and flourish. But when the seed finds good ground, it flourishes and multiplies thirty, sixty and a hundred-fold.
Jesus explained the meaning of the parable to His disciples. The seed is God's Word; it may be Scripture (God's written word), the preaching of the gospel or God's prophetic words spoken over a person. The soil represents the condition of our hearts and how we receive God's Word and act on it.
Jesus instructs us to listen and hear with our heart—our inner person—not our mind and reasoning powers (Matthew 13:9). He makes it clear that hearing and comprehending God's Word is something we choose to do. If we choose to “hear” this way, we will receive His Word and act on it. Hearing, receiving and acting on His Word are active choices that open our access to God's Kingdom and everything it contains.
The master key to everything is what we do with God's Word. Do we persistently seek His Word, choosing to hear and comprehend it? If we do, it becomes alive and puts down roots deep into our hearts, and we will believe it and act on it accordingly. When we receive His Word this way, it becomes the master key to everything God has for us in His Kingdom.
Every time we are exposed to God's Word, we make an active choice about how we will hear and receive it. Choose today to hear, comprehend and act on God's Word to you!
